Pterygium Surgery: A Review of Recurrence-Free Procedures

Looking for a place that excels in pterygium surgery? Here's a review of recurrence-free surgery.
<Pterygium Surgery Review - Before>
December 10, 2018
This is a female patient born in 1957.
This is the patient's left eye, and the pterygium tissue had already invaded the cornea.
<Pterygium Surgery Review - After>
January 17, 2018
This is the appearance one month after the surgery.
It has recovered very cleanly, right?
<5 Years Later>
It's truly unfortunate...
Pterygium is a relatively common condition, affecting 1 to 2 out of 10 people.
Even among those who undergo surgery, one in four experiences a recurrence...
It's really upsetting...
According to one study, the recurrence rate after pterygium surgery is about 25%.
What's even more concerning is that once a recurrence occurs, the adhesion becomes much more severe than before the surgery, making reoperation more difficult.
Eventually...
The fibrovascular tissue continues to grow...
Completely covering the pupil...
In severe cases,
One eye may become almost unusable.
In the worst-case scenario,
It can even lead to strabismus.
One of the reasons why it recurs so easily is that there may be a problem with the surgical method itself.
Looking at the surgical methods used in general hospitals,
After removing the pterygium,
They take a part of the patient's body tissue that is most similar and then attach and stitch it.
Pterygium surgery well
Usually, the upper eyelid is turned over and the strongest conjunctiva is used.
However, this method is prone to recurrence because the sutures dissolve and the fixation strength weakens.
Moreover, in addition to recurrence,
The stitched sutures continue to irritate the eye even after surgery,
It's just uncomfortable and can cause throbbing pain.
If the patient's management is inadequate,
Inflammation occurs quickly and the eyes become red and swollen.
When I was working as a professor at a university hospital,
I used the above method of autologous conjunctival transplantation,
But now...
I no longer use it because it has a high possibility of recurrence and patients feel uncomfortable.
The method I currently use
Instead of suturing the autologous conjunctiva with thread,
It is a method of attaching it using glue, a biocompatible adhesive material.
Pterygium surgery well
Because it is made of harmless ingredients,
There are almost no side effects.
Moreover, among the patients who have undergone pterygium surgery at our hospital so far,
There has not been a single person who has returned due to recurrence.
also
Since there are no sutures because it is not a suturing method,
There is almost no possibility of inflammation.
Less pain and bleeding
Even after surgery, you can return to your daily life immediately without any special discomfort.
Then, what you might be wondering here is,
'Then why don't they use this method in a place that is good at pterygium surgery?'
I think it will be.
One of the reasons is that
The difficulty is high.
It is difficult for all doctors to immediately follow after learning it once or twice.
At least dozens of clinical trials
You have to experience it yourself,
You can cleanly attach the suture area.
If the attachment is incorrect,
The eyes become more and more uncomfortable
Recurrence can be faster.
My YouTube channel is 'Ophthalmologist Sister' ^^
The second reason is that
That's because I don't know this method well.
Pterygium is generally
Because it is not seen as a serious eye disease,
There are very few places that are good at pterygium surgery.
Also, the surgery cost
Because it is not as high as LASIK and LASEK,
Usually doctors
I don't bother trying to learn new skills.
So look for this method
Unless you study,
There's no way to know...ㅜ
So most places that are good at pterygium surgery
We continue to use the classic, existing methods.
Sigh...ㅠ
After receiving surgery like this
It really hurts my heart to see patients who have recurred and come back.
I don't mind if it takes a long time.
Patients again
If you regain your healthy and clear eyes,
No matter how many hours it takes
I am performing the surgery with care.
