Cataract Surgery: Why Choosing the Right Clinic Matters

"Even as my parents got older and their eyesight worsened, they never mentioned cataracts, worried about burdening us children. They just lived with it…"
More than half of the patients who come to our clinic for cataract treatment are brought by their children.
Many elderly individuals experience a decline in cognitive function, and they often don't express the initial blurry vision they experience.
While rapid cataract progression is easily noticed, gradual decline often goes unnoticed. Patients may wonder, 'When did my vision get this bad?'
This blurred vision can lead to cognitive decline, slowing down thought processes and making it difficult to articulate thoughts clearly.
In such cases, timely surgery is crucial.
I recently discussed cataracts and eye health on YTN FM radio. ^^
Hello, I'm Dr. Kim Sun-young, the head of Gangnam Healing Eye Clinic and an ophthalmologist with 17 years of experience.
I graduated from Catholic Medical School, a top institution in ophthalmology, and worked as a clinical professor in the cataract department at Catholic St. Mary's Hospital.
To date, I have performed over 20,000 cataract surgeries, a number that ranks among the highest in Korea.
(It's a bit embarrassing to say this myself..^^)
I even performed cataract surgery on my own mother, and she packed me a heartfelt lunchbox.. hehe.
Many of you reading this may be looking for a cataract surgery clinic in Gangnam for yourselves or your parents.
You might be wondering:
"Should I choose a highly skilled doctor?"
"Or is it better to go to a clinic with affordable lens options?"
I want to share something important with those of you facing this dilemma.
Recently, I was invited to appear on KBS's "Worth Trying in the Morning" program. ^^
One of our patients had cataract surgery at Gangnam A Eye Clinic but experienced poor vision recovery and severe glare, leading to depression.
When they requested a second surgery at Clinic A, they were told it was not possible and advised to seek treatment at a university hospital or another clinic.
Clinics with excessively low prices often operate on a high-volume, factory-like model, which can lead to lower salaries for medical staff.
Experienced doctors with over 10 years of experience and extensive surgical expertise are unlikely to work in such environments.
This often results in less experienced doctors with only 4-5 years of experience working at these clinics, increasing the risk of surgical errors.
The patient in question received quotes of 3 million won and 6 million won for revision surgery from two other hospitals.
Desperate, they found our clinic through a YouTube video.
The image above shows the medical record from Clinic A.
Upon review, it stated, 'The right eye structure is weak and entered the sulcus.'
This means that the vitreous body pushed the lens forward, causing it to become lodged in the suture area, preventing the lens from properly positioning itself.
This issue was 100% due to the inexperience and lack of skill of the medical staff.
After examining the patient, I found the issue was easily resolved.
I repositioned the vitreous body, moved the lens back, and used the capsulorhexis capture technique to precisely center it.
The lens was readjusted in just 10 minutes, and the cost was around 80,000 won.
As you can see in the after photo, the misaligned lens is now properly positioned, and the iris is round and beautiful again.
The next day, the patient reported improved vision and reduced glare.
Cataract surgery is a significant, once-in-a-lifetime procedure, so it's crucial to be wary of Gangnam cataract clinics that only emphasize low prices.
The term 'surgical fee' refers to the 'hands' of the doctor.
If a clinic offers unusually low fees, there's likely a reason.
If you look at the medical record above, you'll notice a lack of follow-up care.
Inexperienced doctors often have limited experience with revision surgeries.
Besides repositioning the lens, they may refer patients to other hospitals for relatively minor issues like dry eye, refractive errors, lens replacement, or floaters, or charge exorbitant fees.
This is like driving a car without insurance.
I offer a 'Lifetime Guarantee' to all patients who undergo surgery at our clinic.
We provide free care for any unexpected side effects that may arise after surgery.
(We even replace lenses at no additional cost when necessary.)
However, this isn't just about coming to our clinic.
I simply hope that you carefully choose a Gangnam cataract clinic and regain clear, healthy vision. That alone makes me happy. ^^
