Cataract Surgery: Why Choosing the Right Clinic Matters

"As my parents got older,
they could barely see, but...
they didn't want to burden us,
so they didn't even mention they had cataracts..."
Among those who visit our clinic for cataract treatment,
half of them bring their parents.
Often, elderly individuals experience a decline in cognitive function,
so they don't readily show it when their vision becomes slightly blurred.
If cataracts progress rapidly, they easily notice, 'My vision has become very blurry.'
However, if cataracts develop slowly,
they often live without realizing, 'When did I start seeing this poorly?'
As a result, when their vision deteriorates,
their cognitive abilities decline,
their thinking speed slows down,
and they can't speak as fluently as they used to.
Therefore, in such cases,
it's best to consider surgery.
I recently had a discussion about cataracts and eye health on YTN FM radio. ^^
Cataract Surgery Clinic
An ophthalmologist who has performed 20,000 cataract surgeries
Hello.
I'm Kim Sun-young, the head director of Gangnam Healing Eye Clinic,
and an ophthalmology specialist with 17 years of experience.
I graduated from Catholic Medical University,
considered one of the top in the field of ophthalmology,
and served as a clinical professor in the cataract department
at Catholic St. Mary's Hospital.
I have personally performed over 20,000 cataract surgeries to date,
a number that is among the highest in Korea.
(It's a bit embarrassing to say myself...^^)
I even performed surgery on my own mother,
and she packed me a lunch box with such care.. haha
Among those of you reading this,
many may be looking for a cataract surgery clinic
for yourselves or your parents.
You might be thinking,
"Is it better to go to a skilled doctor?"
"Or is it better to go to a clinic with lower lens costs?"
I have a story I want to share with those of you.
I recently received a casting offer from KBS 'Worthwhile Morning' and appeared on the show ^^
Cataract Surgery Clinic
You should always be suspicious of places that are unconditionally cheap.
There was a patient who came to our hospital,
who had surgery at A Eye Clinic in Gangnam,
but her vision did not recover well,
and the glare became so severe
that she eventually suffered from depression.
Originally, she went back to Hospital A, where she had the surgery,
to request a revision surgery,
but the hospital said, "Revision surgery is difficult,"
and told her that she would have to go to a university hospital or another hospital.
In general, very cheap hospitals are likely to be factory-style hospitals that operate on a high-volume, low-margin basis.
As a result, doctors' salaries are bound to be lower.
That's why doctors with more than 10 years of experience like me,
and who have accumulated a certain amount of surgical experience,
don't bother working at these hospitals.
As a result, new doctors with only 4-5 years of experience
naturally flock to these hospitals,
increasing the possibility of mistakes during surgery.
This patient also received quotes for revision surgery from two other places,
one was 3 million won,
and the other was 6 million won.
Eventually, feeling like she was grasping at straws,
she watched YouTube
and ended up coming to our hospital.
The photo above is the 'medical record'
issued by Hospital A,
which I have personally reviewed.
It says, 'The right eye structure is weak,
and it went into the sulcus!'
This means that
the vitreous body, which should be in the back,
pushed forward,
pushing the lens and getting caught in the sealed area,
preventing the lens from being properly positioned
in its normal location.
This problem is actually 100%
due to the doctor's lack of experience and skill.
As a result of my direct confirmation,
it was a situation that could be easily resolved.
I pushed the vitreous body, which was distorting the pupil,
backwards,
moved the lens back,
and re-centered it using a capsular capture technique using the capsular bag.
I put the lens back in its original place
in 10 minutes,
and the cost was around 80,000 won.
If you take a good look
at the appearance after the surgery,
you can see that the lens, which was crooked, has returned to its original position,
and the iris is round and beautiful.
She came back the next day for an examination,
and she said that her vision had improved
and the glare had decreased a lot.
As this eye surgery may be a once-in-a-lifetime event,
if it is a cataract surgery clinic that simply emphasizes low prices...
you should at least think twice about it.
We often talk about
the cost of surgery, which is called 'soo-ga' (fee), right?
Here, 'soo (手)'
means 'hand.'
In the end, it means 'the doctor's hand.'
If the value of that hand is too low...
Wouldn't there be a reason for that?

Go to a place with thorough follow-up care.
If you look at the medical records above,
there is almost no follow-up care.
Of course, inexperienced doctors
will have no experience with revision surgery.
Including moving the lens to its correct position like this time,
dry eye,
lens replacement,
floaters,
refractive errors,
...etc.
Even simple things
are sent to other hospitals,
or they charge millions of won.
It's like driving a car without insurance.
It's similar to not registering for insurance
to save even a penny
on a car that you don't know when it will have an accident.
That's why I
offer a lifetime warranty
to everyone who has surgery at our eye clinic.
We provide free care for all side effects
that may occur unexpectedly after surgery.
(Lens replacement is also provided free of charge.)
That doesn't mean you have to come to our hospital.
I would be happy if you all
choose a cataract surgery clinic carefully
and regain clear and healthy vision. ^^
