A Cataract Surgeon's Personal Experience: Operating on My Own Mother

While there are many skilled cataract surgeons in Korea,
I imagine it's not often that they operate on their own parents.
Having worked as an ophthalmologist for 18 years,
I've performed over 20,000 cataract surgeries to date.
And on July 4th, I personally operated on my own mother.
Well-known for Presbyopia and Cataract Surgery
It's difficult to operate on acquaintances, then relatives, but even more so on family.
Even though it was a familiar procedure, my hands trembled slightly that day.
The desire to perform perfectly, without any errors, was felt in my fingertips.
I even held my breath until the final moment of removing the cloudy cataract and inserting the lens.
Only after applying the protective lens and eye drops did I finally exhale.
My mother had been living with blurred vision for years,
but she didn't say anything, worried about her daughter.
When she came to Seoul to see me after a long time,
I was shocked to see her eyes.
Her cataracts were quite advanced, so I performed the surgery immediately.
After the surgery, as my mother looked at my face with her newly cleared vision,
she inexplicably teared up. (I almost cried too.)
I've seen countless difficult patient cases, but operating on family always leaves me feeling drained.
(My father also had surgery two years ago.)
I once performed surgery on up to 51 people in a single day.
The notebooks filled with patient lens stickers are piled up this high. ^^
With around 20,000 cases...
I think I'm probably among the top five surgeons in Korea.
These days, I'm active on YouTube as 'Ophthalmologist Sister (62K).’
Some TV producers who have heard my story come to me. haha
What they say is,
'We're looking for a place that's good at presbyopia and cataract surgery.
There are many people with a lot of surgical experience, but you explain things so calmly and well.
If you're willing, could you participate in our program as a consultant?'
I talked about what patients should ask at the hospital when choosing a cataract lens. ^^
I revealed all my know-how on YTN FM radio about how to delay presbyopia and cataracts. ^^
It was a little embarrassing, but I had the opportunity to appear on TV, so I worked hard during filming. ^^
As a result, many people recognize me these days. haha
Not only fellow doctors, but also patients.
'Are you the Ophthalmologist Sister?
I really enjoyed the cataract video you uploaded!'
Many people say this.
Thanks to that, these days, even on weekday mornings,
I'm fully booked,
and more people are coming to see me.
I prepare hundreds of lenses in different powers so that people who come can have surgery on the same day. ^^
Because I use so many lenses,
Johnson & Johnson, the largest cataract lens company in the United States,
specifically requested to visit our 'Healing Eye Clinic' when they came to Korea.
We talked about future lens trends for two hours.
The woman in the pink dress is the developer of the i-Hance lens. ^^
And recently,
I gave a solo lecture at a gathering of 100 ophthalmologists, the largest in China. ^^
(To be honest, I was a little less nervous than when I operated on my mother. haha)

As international exchanges increase,
our hospital was the first in Korea to receive and perform surgery with the newly released 'PureSee lens,'
which is said to be the best value for money in the United States. ^^

A Good Place for Presbyopia and Cataract Surgery? I don't think so.
People who see this background
call me a 'cataract surgery master,'
but I don't think that's the case.
There are many people more skilled than me in Korea.
I'm just one of the many ophthalmologists in Korea who meet people who can't even see KakaoTalk text well due to presbyopia,
who have blurred vision and have difficulty driving at night,
listen to their stories, and help them see again.
It is my greatest happiness and pride to have provided even a small amount of help to the patients who have passed through my hands.
The title of 'cataract surgery master' is an undeserved honor for me.
If any of you are struggling with cataracts,
feel free to come and share your concerns.
Whether it's 20 or 30 minutes,
I'll listen to everything.
And
I will explain everything kindly and in detail until all your questions are resolved. ^^
